A April 21st Square it is the heart of Historic Center of Garopaba. Simple, welcoming, and full of history, it preserves the essence of the old fishing village that gave rise to the city. It is also the perfect starting point for those who wish to explore the historic streets and get to know the local cultural heritage up close.
It was in this space that, still in the 18th century, the community began to gather around the old Parish Church of Saint Joachim, built after the creation of the Parish of Garopaba in 1830. Very close to there operated the old Whaling Station São Joaquim de Garopaba, ...where oil extracted from whales was processed and used in construction and lighting—an activity that profoundly marked the history and development of the region.
Formerly called Main Square, the space was named April 21st Square, in reference to a national historical date that symbolizes freedom and is commemorated in several Brazilian cities.
Today, the square continues to be a meeting point between past and present. Around it, it is possible to find... art galleries, craft shops and cultural spaces which breathe new life into the historic center. While walking around, it's worth observing the details of colorful houses all around and continue along cobblestone streets of the surrounding area — a tour that invites you to slow down and rediscover the charm of Garopaba's living history.
