Mansion in the Historic Center

Mansion in the Historic Center It is one of the most emblematic landmarks of Garopaba — it's impossible to pass through the Historic Center without noticing its imposing presence next to the Historic Church of São Joaquim. Built between 1793 and 1795, it was the former main house of the São Joaquim whaling station, where the administration of whaling took place, an activity that profoundly marked the formation of the city. From its elevated position, the mansion offered a strategic view of the entire bay, being the setting for decisions, meetings, and stories that helped shape the municipality.

With its preserved Luso-Brazilian architecture, the manor house draws attention for its arched balconies, blue windows, and prominence in the landscape—being the only remaining whaling station administration building in Brazil. Over the centuries, it has hosted illustrious travelers, such as the naturalist... Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, It hosted authorities and even hosted important ceremonies in local history.

Today, in addition to being a historical landmark, the mansion houses a Craft shop (Paiol), where it is possible to purchase souvenirs and items produced by local artisans — a way to take a piece of Garopaba's culture home and support the municipality's creative economy.

Strolling around the Casarão is like stepping back in time: calm sea ahead, Morro da Vigia in the background, and the atmosphere of the old center of Garopaba, where it all began. It's an invitation to appreciate the view, explore the history, and feel the connection between nature, culture, and memory. Whether to take beautiful photos, learn about the whaling past, or simply contemplate the scenery, the Casarão is a must-see for anyone visiting Garopaba.
