the destination

Where nature pulsates., The culture is welcoming and life goes on all year round.

Garopaba is a destination that goes beyond the obvious.

Nestled between mountains and sea, the city preserves an ancestral essence, where Azorean culture, the traditions of artisanal mullet fishing, and flour mills keep the local identity alive.

Known as the surf capital of Santa Catarina and a hub for sustainability, Garopaba reveals its authenticity in the little things: in the collective work of the communities, in the legends carved into the rocks, and in the simplicity that transforms everyday life into an experience.

It's a place to take a deep breath, slow down, and feel—because here, time takes on a different rhythm.

History

Before it became a destination, Garopaba was already a refuge.

Among the rocks and shell mounds that line the coast, ancestral peoples left marks that have withstood the test of time—forms and symbols that tell of an ancient way of inhabiting the sea and the land. The name comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means "boat cove," a perfect translation for what it has always been: a natural harbor, a place of arrivals, crossings, and encounters.

With the arrival of Azorean immigrants in the 17th century, Garopaba gained new colors and customs. Between the sea and the mountains, they built flour mills, created traditions, strengthened artisanal fishing, and made hospitality a legacy. The sound of nets in the sea, the smell of roasting cassava, and the rhythm of community festivals became part of the city's way of life.

Today, Garopaba is a living reflection of that history.

From the whaling era to the preservation of the Southern Right Whale, from surfboards on the waves to trails that hold rock inscriptions, the city keeps its essence alive: nature, culture, and well-being. A place where the past and present meet in harmony — and where life pulsates, with soul and presence, every day of the year.
