Built in 1795, the Saint Joachim Church It is one of the most important heritage sites in Garopaba and one of the symbols of the old whaling station. Initially a small chapel with a dirt floor, it gained shape and recognition over the years, especially after 1830, when the Parish of São Joaquim was officially created. From then on, different vicars contributed to the growth of the structure, expanding its spaces and strengthening its importance to the local community.

The most significant period of this process began in 1862 with the arrival of Vicar Raphael Faraco. Under his leadership, the old chapel was transformed into a church, receiving a main altar, throne, choir, pulpit, flooring, and ceiling. In 1884, the bell—dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi—was installed next to the church, and, with the growth of the town of Garopaba, other religious expressions were established, such as the Chapel of Senhor Bom Jesus in 1896. In the 20th century, important reforms strengthened the structure, including the construction of the tower and the staircase, inaugurated on Christmas 1937, and the complete renovation finalized in 1978.

Designated as a protected historical site of Santa Catarina since 1998, the São Joaquim Church continues to be a space of faith, culture, and memory for residents and visitors alike. Located in the historic center and surrounded by beautiful landscapes, it invites visitors to experience local history, admire its Azorean architecture, and get to know one of the deepest roots of Garopaba's identity.
